Positive Steps taken by DfT and Code of Practice Steering Group

The consultation process on the draft revised Code of Practice has seen an overwhelming response from the sector.  From the comments received one of the most significant issues identified was regarding the risk based approach and how this may be implemented in a highway authority context.  As such, the Department for Transport has agreed additional guidance will be developed to support practitioners in this area, as such the expected launch is summer 2016.

Bridge inspector scheme launched

This autumn sees the introduction of a new National Highways Sector Scheme encompassing the certification of bridge inspectors.  Quality of bridge inspections across the British Isles is expected to improve with publication of a new certification scheme, endorsed by the UK Bridges Board and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.  It is hoped that the certification scheme will increase confidence amoung bridge owners, who will now have proof of competence of their bridge inspectors.

HMEP e-learning toolkit now available

HMEP e-learning toolkit

An on-line, free to access, Asset Management E-Learning Toolkit that provides a consistent way for staff working in Local Highway Authorities to learn the essential, long-term planning skills needed to help deliver better roads and services, more efficiently, is now available from HMEP. The new online training system allows highway practitioners to learn in their own time, at their own pace, while generating a completion certificate in association with The Chartered Institution of Highways Transportation (CIHT).
