It is almost a year now since the new Code of Practice was published. The new Code of Practice is an important development in how we all manage our highway infrastructure assets and it reflects our sectors maturity in its approach to asset management. By moving to a risk based approach, the guidance facilitates Highway Authorities aligning their highway services with their local priorities and objectives, supporting process review to find service efficiencies, particularly in routine activities. To assist UKRLG in supporting you achieving these aims, we are carrying out a survey to establish progress towards implementation of the new Code. For those that are making good progress, this will be an opportunity to share a high-level view of the different approaches to implementation of the risk based approach and the resource implications to help others in developing their plans. For those who are making slower progress, we seek to understand the main blockers to progress so that we can better support you. The survey should only take about 10 minutes, please complete before 31st October 2017 and a summary of the results will be shared after the survey closes. https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/UKRLGCodeofPractice

A powerful example of social commentary which tackles the complex moral issues of transport planning in the context of the decisions made in designing society at a local level, from why Paris has a concentration of bread shops to how infrastructure can (and should) evolve in response to the requirements of the ageing population. Professor Nick Tyler is the Chadwick Professor of Engineering at UCL. As the founder of UCL Pedestrian Accessibility Movement & Environment Laboratory (PAMELA), Nicks research interest focuses on the way people interact with their immediate environments with a view to improving the design of transport built environment. He also works on low-carbon technologies for transport systems. This interview explores a wide range of issues from how philosophy can influence transport decisions, how the price of bread influences mobility, to how urban developments are managed in post-conflict situations.
