Management of Highway Structures, the code of practice for highway bridge and structure maintenance management was published in September 2005. It provides local authorities with guidance on structures management in an ever changing environment, creating a strong foundation for a positive and lasting maintenance policy. Adoption of the recommendations in this code will help the delivery of Best Value services.
'Well-managed highway infrastructure' superceds the previous Codes 'Well-maintained Highways', 'Well-lit Highways' and 'Management of Highway Structures'. This was published on 28 October 2016. The new Code can either be adopted straightaway by authorities or they have until October 2018 to adopt a risk based approach.
The Code was drafted by a team from Atkins on behalf of the UK Bridges Board. It is one of a suite of Codes commissioned by the UK Roads Liaison Group.
